Promise Ring Guide — Common Questions
What is a promise ring?
A promise ring is a ring given as a symbol of commitment between two people before an engagement. It represents a promise of love, loyalty, or a shared future together. Promise rings are popular between romantic partners, best friends, or as a personal commitment to oneself.
What is the difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring?
A promise ring symbolises commitment or future intention, while an engagement ring is a formal proposal of marriage. Promise rings are typically simpler in design and more affordable. A promise ring often comes before an engagement and can be given at any stage of a relationship.
What finger does a promise ring go on?
A promise ring is most commonly worn on the left or right ring finger. Many people wear it on the right hand to distinguish it from an engagement ring. There are no strict rules — it comes down to personal preference and cultural background.
When should you give a promise ring?
There is no set timeline. Most couples exchange promise rings after dating seriously for several months to a few years, when they want to express commitment but are not yet ready for engagement. They can also be given on Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or birthdays.
What do you say when giving a promise ring?
Keep it heartfelt and personal. You might say "This ring is my promise to always choose you" or "I'm not ready to propose yet, but I want you to know I'm committed to our future." The most meaningful words are the ones that reflect your relationship.
How much should a promise ring cost?
Promise rings typically cost between $30 and $500, making them much more affordable than engagement rings. The price depends on the material — stainless steel and titanium rings start from around $60–$300 while sterling silver rings range from $80–$500, and rings with gemstones or moissanite can cost more. At Just Promise Rings we have styles to suit every budget with free shipping included.
Men's Promise Rings — Common Questions
Do men wear promise rings?
Yes, promise rings for men are increasingly common and widely accepted. Men's promise rings are typically simple band styles in masculine materials like tungsten, titanium, stainless steel, or wood inlay. They are worn as a symbol of commitment without the formality of an engagement ring.
What is the best promise ring for a man?
The best promise ring for a man is typically a simple, durable band in a masculine material. Tungsten carbide is the most popular choice for men due to its extreme scratch resistance and satisfying weight. Titanium is another excellent option — lightweight, hypoallergenic, and very strong. Most men prefer wider bands between 6mm and 8mm in matte or brushed finishes rather than polished or decorative styles.
What width promise ring should a man get?
Most men prefer rings between 6mm and 8mm wide. A 6mm band is versatile and suits slimmer fingers, while an 8mm band makes a bolder statement and suits larger hands. Men with wider fingers or who prefer a more substantial look typically go for 8mm or wider.
Is tungsten or titanium better for a men's promise ring?
Both are excellent but suit different preferences. Tungsten is heavier and virtually scratch-proof, which many men love for its substantial feel. However tungsten cannot be resized. Titanium is much lighter, hypoallergenic, and can sometimes be resized. If your partner is sensitive to weight or metals, titanium is the better choice. If they want maximum durability and a solid feel, tungsten wins.
What is the most durable material for a men's promise ring?
Tungsten carbide is the most scratch-resistant material available for men's rings — it is nearly impossible to scratch under normal conditions. Titanium is slightly less hard but extremely lightweight and completely hypoallergenic. Both materials are excellent for men who work with their hands or lead active lifestyles. Stainless steel is also very durable and the most budget-friendly option.
Can a men's promise ring be resized?
This depends on the material. Sterling silver and gold rings can usually be resized by a jeweller. Tungsten carbide rings cannot be resized due to the hardness of the material — if you need a different size, the ring needs to be exchanged. Titanium rings can sometimes be resized slightly. We recommend measuring carefully before ordering and contacting us if you need sizing help.
What size ring do most men wear?
The average men's ring size is between US size 9 and 10, with size 10 being the most common. However ring sizes vary significantly. The best way to find the right size is to measure an existing ring the person wears, or use a ring sizer. Our men's rings are available in standard US sizes typically from size 7 to 13.
Are men's promise rings waterproof?
Our tungsten, titanium, and stainless steel men's rings are all water-resistant and safe for everyday wear including washing hands and light water exposure. They will not rust or tarnish. We recommend removing rings before extended swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater to preserve the finish long term.
What does it mean when a man wears a promise ring?
When a man wears a promise ring it typically means he is in a committed relationship and wearing a symbol of that commitment. It can represent a promise of faithfulness, a future engagement, or simply a mutual agreement between partners to be exclusive and serious about their relationship.
Can you get men's promise rings engraved?
Yes, many of our men's ring styles can be custom engraved with names, dates, initials, or a short meaningful message. Engraving on a men's band adds a personal touch that makes the ring uniquely meaningful. Contact us before ordering to confirm your chosen style supports engraving.
What finger does a man wear a promise ring on?
Most men wear a promise ring on the left ring finger or the right ring finger. The right hand is common for promise rings to avoid confusion with a wedding or engagement ring. Ultimately there are no rules — it comes down to personal preference and comfort.
Are wood inlay rings good for men?
Wood inlay rings are very popular with men who want something unique and natural-looking. They combine a durable metal base (usually tungsten or stainless steel) with a genuine wood inlay, giving a rustic, earthy appearance. They are durable for everyday wear but should be kept away from prolonged water exposure to protect the wood inlay.
